1st World War
Mountmellick played its part in the 1st World war when men from the town joined the allies in the fight for democracy.
Unfortunately at the time and the political upheaval at home, those soldiers that joined British Regiments both in Ireland and in the UK were not given the hero’s welcome that they deserved. They were mourned quietly, remembered fondly but not talked about.
With the political changes now in place and the reflective mood of the Irish community, people are looking back at these brave soldiers, those memories being remoulded into personal stories of dedication to duty and personal sacrifice.
To commemorate WW1, Irish communities are preparing memorials to the men from their hometown and plans are in place to hold a remembrance event in some way. If you are a descendant of a WW1 soldier from Mountmellick and now living abroad, we would welcome and any information you may have or if you wish to know more about your ancestral home, we extend a warm welcome to you and your family. Please contact us if you would like to include any member of your family and or visit Mountmellick to explore the town.
