Our Heritage Story

The story of The Forum-Mountmellick began long before the restoration of the church, manse and coach house.
Growing up in Mountmellick during the 1970s and 1980s, Eugene remembers a town full of life, enterprise and community spirit. Once known as the "Manchester of Ireland", Mountmellick was a thriving market and industrial town where people knew one another, businesses flourished and community life was at the heart of everyday living.
Although much has changed over the years, Eugene never lost his belief that Mountmellick remained a special place. Friends visiting from outside the area often commented on the town's rich history, beautiful architecture and warm welcome, reinforcing his conviction that there was something unique here worth preserving and sharing.
The vision for The Forum was born from two simple ideas: to create a welcoming place where those who have left Mountmellick and settled around the world could return home to reconnect with family, friends and their roots; and to provide visitors with an inspiring base from which to discover the heritage, people and stories that make the town so distinctive.
The name "The Forum" was inspired by the ancient Roman forum, a gathering place at the heart of community life where people met, exchanged ideas, shared stories and formed lasting relationships. It perfectly reflected the vision for what these historic buildings could become.
With the valued support of Laois Partnership, the former Presbyterian Church, Manse and Coach House have been carefully restored and brought back to life. What were once vacant buildings have been transformed into unique heritage accommodation that celebrates the character and history of the site while providing modern comfort for today's guests.
At The Forum-Mountmellick, we believe that regenerative tourism begins with respect for place, people and heritage. By preserving these historic buildings and welcoming visitors to experience them, we hope to contribute to the ongoing story of Mountmellick and its future.
Today, guests from Ireland and beyond gather here to celebrate family occasions, reconnect with loved ones, explore Ireland's Ancient East and experience the warmth and heritage of our town.
When you stay at The Forum-Mountmellick, you are not simply visiting a destination. You become part of its continuing story.
